After the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic and with the cessation of normal life as we know it, many artistic groups, festivals and cultural in- stitutions began organizing performances, festivals, conferences and gatherings using modern technology such as online performances and festivals. Conferences and discussions were held across different platforms, such as ZOOM, where some interaction was created between artists and their audiences, while some resisted this new method and considered it rigid, insensitive and were unable to interact with this form. At the “Artist-Audience Relationship Amid the Pandemic Session,” we will try to answer the following questions to address the initiated topic: How have remote performances and festivals contributed to the relationship between artists and their audiences? Did these events attract a new audience? Was the participation with online performances restricted to professionals and enthusiasts, or did it attract more of a public/mainstream audience? What are the technical and financial problems facing the companies, collectives, individuals and festivals in this context? How have conferences and gatherings held across platforms such as Zoom contributed in enhancing dialogue and interaction between institutions and artists if at all? How have conferences and gatherings held on online platforms contributed to attracting new speak- ers and participants, especially those who previously could not participate due to financial or political reasons? What are the lessons learnt as a result of organizing online performances, festivals, gatherings and conferences? How will this experience continue after the pandemic ends and life returns to “normal”? Eckhard Thiemann is Art Director of the Shubbak Festival of Contemporary Arab Culture.
